Myeik Hospital in Myanmar has taken delivery of a new laser machine, provided by Sight For All with support from the Australian Government’s Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).

The first machine of its kind at the hospital, it will be used to treat patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy.

Responding to the increasing incidence of diabetes and associated eye problems in Myanmar, Sight For All donated an indirect ophthalmoscope and lenses to Myeik Hospital in 2018.

Myeik is a coastal city overlooking the Andaman Sea in the Tanintharyi Region in the far south of Myanmar.

The latest donation of the laser machine enables consulting doctors to provide comprehensive diabetic retinopathy diagnoses and treatment.

Visionary Prof Paul Mitchell and Dr Suriya from Sydney University recently visited Yangon Eye Hospital (YEH) to teach five ophthalmologists from five Regional Hospitals in Myanmar how to use a laser machine.

Sight For All, in collaboration with the YEH, have been training local ophthalmologists to enable them to better diagnose and treat diabetic retinopathy patients in their own regions.

Currently, due to lack of equipment and training, most diabetic retinopathy patients in rural areas do not have access to specialised treatment.

Moving forward, Sight For All and Yangon Eye Hospital plan to improve diabetic retinopathy treatment in low-service areas.

Following the training of more ophthalmologists, Sight For All will donate and install laser machines in other regional hospitals to enable them to deliver more comprehensive diabetic retinopathy treatment services across Myanmar.
